Cannae is a major Roman Supply Barracks. Hannibal needs supplies and knows he can’t lose so he uses a new strategy. Puts the weaker infantry in the middle in a Ω shape, so when they collapse, they will form a U, and the cavalry, who is on the flanks and are superior to the Romans, can flank and attack the roman infantry (who is superior) from behind, making the Romans fight on all angles. Strategy is a great success, Rome loses 50,000 out of 80,000 men, some allies (mostly southeastern Italy) begin to turn. Hannibal takes Capua as a base for the time being, waiting for his brother to cross the alps and bring resources. He is killed and Hannibal is eventually driven out of Capua/called back to Carthage to fight at Zama. |
