reverts to greek cross plan

stopped by the sack of Rome

combines plans of Peruzzi, Bramante, and Raphael

looked ri-friggin'-diculous

back to Latin Cross

1546-? - Michaelangelo

rejected and destroyed much of what Sangallo did

citing that whole money forging and nun-raping thing

back to Greek Cross

this is the one that is most the one today!

1586 - Giacomo della Porta

Michaelangelo's pupil

raised the dome's profile and added a lantern

 

1606 - A committee of 10 architects

decided to abandon Mike's greek cross in favor of a latin one

1607-1629 Carlo Maderno

designed the new nave

added chapels and facade elements reminiscent of Michaelangelo's exterior

nave and facade completed by 1615

1629 - Gianlorenzo Bernini

finished the interior after Maderno's death in 1629
