Ponds are smaller and shallower. This allows sunlight to reach the bottom and life can grow throughout. Lakes are larger and deeper. Life can only grow on edges because sunlight doesn't reach the bottom. |

A seasonal change that refreshes the supply of nutrients throughout a lake. In summer the sun warms the upper layer of the lake. Warm air floats on top of cooler, denser lower layers. In the fall, the top layer cools and sinks. This causes lake waters and nutrients to mix togehter. |
