Term
Respiratory System
(It can be classified according to eiher structure or Functional.)
Definition
Consists of the Nose, Pharynx (throat), Larynx (voice box), Trachea (windpipe), Bronchi, and Lungs.
Term
Respiratory System
(It can be classified according to eiher structure or Functional.)
Definition
Consists of the Nose, Pharynx (throat), Larynx (voice box), Trachea (windpipe), Bronchi, and Lungs.
Term
Upper Respiratory
(Structual)
Definition
The Nose, Pharynx, and associated structures.
Term
Lower Respiratory
(Functional)
Definition
Larynx, Trachea, Bronchu, and Lungs.
Term
Conducting Zone
(1 of 2 Functional properties Respiratory System)
Definition
Consist s of a series off interconnecting cavities and tubes both outside and within the lungs- the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and terminals bronchioles- that filter, warm and moisten air and conduct it into the lungs.
Term
Respiratory Zone
(2 of 2 Functional properties Respiratory System)
Definition
Consists of tissues within the lungs where gas exchange occurs- the respiratory bronchioles , aveolar ducts, aveolar sacs, and aveoli, the main sites of gas exchange between air and blood.
Term
Pulmonologist
Definition
Is a specialist in the diagnosis abd treatment if diseases of the lungs.
Term
Otorhinlaryngology
(oto = ear; rhino= nose; laryngo= voice box; logy= study of)
Definition
The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treattment of diseases of the ears, nose, and throat.
Term
Nose
(Can be divided into external and internal portions)
Definition
Nose has 6 different external qualities and 9 different internal qualities.
Term
External Nose
Name Frame work
(See other cards for the cartilage)
Definition
Consists of a supporting framework bone amd hyaline cartilage convered with muscle and skin and lined by a mucous membrane. The frontal bone, nasal bones, and maxillae.
Term
Septal Cartilage (Hint Nose)

Name internal or external
Definition
External nose

Forms the anterior portion of the nasal septum.
Term
Lateral nasal cartilage (Nose)
Name internal or external
Definition
Inferior to Nasal Bones
Term
Alar cartilages (Nose)
Name internal or external
Definition
Forms a portion of the walls of the nostrils.
Term
External Nares (singular is Naris) of nostrils
Definition
The 2 openings that is on the undersurface of the external nose.
Term
External Nose
Name Functions

3 or more
Definition
1: Warming, Mosistening and filtering of incoming air.
2: Dectecting olfactory stimuli
3: Modifying Speech Vibrations as they pass through the large, hollow resonationg chambers.
Term
Internal Nose PART 1

Name framework
Definition
Is a large cavity in the anterior aspect of the skull that lies inerior to the nassal bone and supeirior to the mouth; it is lined with muscle and mucous membrane.

(Anteriorily to External nose and postierioly it follows to the pharynx)
Term
Internal Nose
Name Functions
Definition
1: Communicates with Pharynx (posterior) through 2 openings: the internal nares(or choanae. which effects how we sing or speak.
Term
Internal Nose PART 2

Name Framework
(Connective)
Definition
Ducts from the paranasal sinuses and the nasolacrimal ducts also open into the Internal Nose. Lateral walls are formed by ethmoid, masillae, lacrimal, palatine, and inferior nasal conchae bones.
Term
Internal Nares or Choanae
(Nose)
Name internal or external
Position
Definition
Internal
Two openings in the internal nose that communicates with the pharynx.

Positions( Posterior to the nassal cavities opens to nasopharynx)
Term
Nasal Cavity

Name internal or external

(Position)
Definition
Internal
Basically space in internal Nose.
A mucosa-lined caity on either nasal septum

Position (opens onto the face at the external nares into the nasopharynx at the internal.
Term
Vestibule (Nose)

Name internal or external

(Position)
Definition
Internal
Bump on nose inside (side bumps)

Surrounded by Cartilage.
Position (Anterior position of navel cavity just inside nostrils)
Term
Nasal Septum

Name internal or external

(Position)
Definition
Internal
Splits or divides nasal cavity in left and right sides.
Position (Vertical Partition to vestibule)
Term
HOW THE NOES WORKS.

Air To Nostrils.

Filtration
Definition
When air enters the nostrils, it passes first through the vestibule, which is lined by the skin containing coarse hairs that filter out large dust particles.
Term
HOW THE NOES WORKS.

Subdividing Cavities
Definition
3 shelves formed by there projections of the superior, middle, and inferior massal conchae out of each lateral wall of the caity; The conchae almost reaching the septum, subdivide each side of the nasal cavity into a series of groovelike passageways-the superior, middle, and inferior meatus.
Term
HOW THE NOES WORKS.
Mositening of Air
This is caused by exhaling.
Definition
The arrangement of Conchae and Meatus increases the surface area in the internal nose and prevents dehydration by trapping water droplets during Exhalation.
Term
How the Nose works
Warming Air
& Mucus Trapping Dust.
Definition
As air is inhaled air whirls around the conchae and meatus, it is warmed bu the blood in the capillaries. Mucus secreted by the goblet cells moistne the air and traps dust particles. Drainage from the nasolacrimal ducts also help moisten the air and is sometimes assisted by secretions fronm the paranasl sinuses.
Term
How the nose Works
Mucus Transfer.
Definition
The cilia move the mucus and trapped dust particles toward the pharynx at which point they can be swallowed or spit out, thus removing the particles from the respiratory tract.
Term
Pharynx functions
4 Functions
Definition
Houses tounsils
Functions as Passageway for food
And for air
Has resonating chamber to produce sound in speech.
Term
Pharynx
3 Regions
Definition
NasoPharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
Term
Nasophrarynx
(Upper/ Superior Portion)
5 openings
What are they
Has one tonsil
Definition
Has 5 opening in its walls and extends 2 soft palates.
5 openings: 2 internal nares; 2 openings that lead into auditory tubes; and 1 into Oropharynx.
Tonsil is pharyngel.
Nasopharynx helps move mucus down and exchanges air with auditory tubes to equalize pressure between pharynx and mid ear
Term
Oropharynx
(Intermediate Part)
1 opening
Used for resp. and dig. systems.
Has 2 tonsils.
Definition
Fauces is the opening from the mouth.
Common used as pass for food and air.
Tonsils are Palatine and lingual.
Term
Laryngophraynx
Inferior or lower level.
Definition
used as a pathways and airway. begins at hypoid bone to esophagus.
