the gate keeper for the uterus. A thick connective tissue band about 2 inches in length that separates the uterus and vagina. Under the influcence of estradiol, the cervix is “open” and allows passage of materials into and out of the uterus. Under the influence of progesterone, the cervix is “closed” and prevents entry or exit of materials from the uterus. “Open” and “closed” depend on the type of mucus being secreted by the cervix. The “open” cervix secretes a thin mucus (due to the influence of estradiol), much like saliva that allows passage of materials, particularly sperm. The “closed” cervix a thick, pasty mucus (due to the influence of progesterone) that prevents passage of other materials. |
