Definition
Occlusive disease seen most commonly in young males who smoke or chew tobacco. claudication in arch of foot, sensitivity to cold, numbness, weak pulses, cool skin, red or cyanotic when dependent (hanging downward), superficial phlebitis and/or ulcerations/gangrene in digits. Risk of amputation if smoking is continued 85%+, if d/c'd, 30% or less. |

Definition
Greatly increased bp with no evidence of target organ damage. Meds, diet and follow-up. |

|
Term
|
Definition
Greatly increased BP w/ evidence of target organ damage (stroke, cardiac issues, etc). Must bring bp down slowly so circulation doesn't stop flow to organs. IV meds and hospitalization likely. |

Term
|
Definition
When BP greatly increases after patient (on his own usually) stops taking bp medications. Greatly increases his/her risk for stroke or MI. |

Definition
Internal swelling because can no longer swell outwards. Pain meds don't work. Pulselessness. Medical Emergency! May be treated with fasciaotomy (butterflying of extremity until pressure is released, then sealed back up). |

Hypertension that fails to reach goals with upwards of 3 different meds. |

Term

Definition
Peripheral arterial occlusion that occurs above the inguinal ligament. manifests as intermittent claudication pain in buttocks, thighs or lower back. Less common and less damaging to tissues. |

|
|
Term
Intermittent Claudication |
|
Definition
Cramping, burning muscular pain that goes away within 10 minutes of rest (in early disease). Usually in calf, but may be in joints and thus mistaken as arthritis. Pain goes away when legs are dependent (downward). If pain occurs at rest then indicates advanced disease and amputation is almost guaranteed. Meticulous skin care is important because of the risk for gangrene and decreased wound healing. |
