Term
Tell me about PTL?
Definition
Performance Technologies is a subsidiary of Cheseapeake Energy that performs hydraluic fracturing services for Oklahoma City and the Texas Panhandle.
Term
Is Performance Technologies an independent company?
Definition
Performance Technologies is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chesapeake Oilfield Services, L.L.C. (COS). COS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chesapeake Energy Corporation, the second-largest producer of natural gas, a Top 15 producer of oil and natural gas liquids and the most active driller of new wells in the U.S
Term
What are pressure pumping services?
Definition
Pressure pumping is also known as hydraulic fracturing. Natural gas and oil well completions using hydraulic fracturing technology have been conducted by the industry more than 1.2 million times since the late 1940s, and the technique has become a key component of the natural gas and oil production process worldwide. Properly conducted, modern hydraulic fracturing is a highly engineered, controlled, sophisticated and safe procedure.
Term
Why do companies use hydraulic fracturing?
Definition
It is used to maximize the production potential of a well in the shortest time possible.
Term
In preparation of of the fracking process, what must happen?
Definition
The casing will be perforated by using guns that is conveyed by using explosive charges. These tubing explosives will be about 50-80 feet apart. A workover rig performs these multiple functions.
Term
After the initial fracturing process, what replaces the initial processing crew?
Definition
A hydraulic fracturing crew replaces the workover rig, the crew consists of a number of high pressure pumps and blending equipment.
Term
What does the Hydraulic Fracturing crew do after they arrive?
Definition
First off, water, sand and additives are pumped at high pressures down the wellbore.
Secondly, The liquid goes through perforated sections of the wellbore and into the surrounding formation, fracturing the rock and injecting sand or proppants into the cracks to hold them open.
Term
What is the process of the water going into the oil well?
Definition
The water is first taken out of the well in to storage tanks. Then it is taken through hydration tanks so the water can gel. It is then transferred to a blender. The blender mixes the propellent and some chemicals to help fracturing process with the water. Then high pressure pumps shoots the mixture down the well.
Term
What is a proppant? What are the different types of proppant? What are some of the tradeoffs of Proppant?
Definition
A proppant is a chemical used by hydraulic fracturing that keeps a fracture open for oil. The different types of proppant is gel, foam or slickwater-based. Tradeoffs include visocity of the Proppant, if it is a more concentrated proppant it trades off because it takes more pressure to push the proppant through the pipes. The relationship is included with the increased density which hurts the environment.
Term
Once the Hydraulic fracturing crew finishes the process, does it stop? what does it do?
Definition
No it doesnt. It then starts the entire process over again, but this time instead of using a workover rig, it uses a wireline unit that makes the prep process happened much faster. The main difference is now a isolation process is used to isolate the first hydraulic process section from the new process section.
Term
What is the typical amount of fracking done on a shale formation? What is done after that?
Definition
8-12 sections of fracking. The isolation plug for each section is taken out then production starts. The liquid is then sucked back out into storage tanks to be disposed or recycled according to regulations. Thus, leaving the sand in place to prop open the cracks and allow gas and oil to flow.
Term
What do experts do as the fracking process is happening?
Definition
Experts continually monitor and gauge pressures, fluids and proppants, studying how the sand reacts when it hits the bottom of the wellbore, slowly increasing the density of sand to water as the fracturing progresses.
Term
Who founded chesapeake energy?
Definition
Aubrey McClendon.
Term
What are the six phases of history of chesapeake energy corporation?
Definition
1) 1989 – 93: The Beginning
Aubrey McCledon and Tom Ward

2) 1994 – 96: Continued Success
Major natural gas discovery in the Austin chalk trend.

3) 1997 – 99: Operational Disappointments and Commodity Price Collapse

Tried to extend into texas and louisana but prove very challenging.
Oil and Natural gas was it's lowest in 20 years.

4) 2000 – 02: Corporate Reinvention

Moved from soley a drillbit, fracturing company to lower risk based company and incorporated acquistions for the first time.

5) 2003 – 07: Executing the Land Rush Plan

After using the new plans... chesapeake grew rapidly. Then it started to use the land rush to acquire acerage.

6) The Modern Chesapeake

It is one of the forerunners in natural gas, and it is looking for new natural gas sources. Now chesapeake is balancing unconventional natural gas with unconventional liquid deposits since liquid oil is more profitable.
Term
What is oil well stimulation?
Definition
is a well intervention performed on an oil or gas well to increase production by improving the flow of hydrocarbons from the drainage area into the well bore.
Term
How can perforating guns negatively impact the flow of hydrocarbons *natural gas* to the well bore?
Definition
The explosion from the explosive charges pushes up debris into the cracks made by the charges, hindering the flow of natural gas and/or oil.
Term
How can the chemicals used to extend the fractures for maximum natural gas negatively impact the flow of natural gas to the well bore??
Definition
The chemicals can plug and clog the fractures that the natural gas flows from into the wellbore.
Term
What are some of the sample processes of oil well stimulation? Which one is the cheapest?
Definition
propellant stimulation
Acidizing
Coiled Tubing
Gas lift

Acidizing is the cheapest
Term
What is a wireline used for in oil well completions?
Definition
It is used to run tools down the oil well bore for multiple functions.
Term
What is Fracture mechanics?
Definition
the study of materials with preexisting flaws failing from stress.
Term
What is Fracture toughness?
Definition
It is represented by the value Kic, which is the critical value in which at the crack tip catastrophic failure occurs.
