Term
James-Lange theory of emotion
Definition
The theory states that within human beings, as a response to experiences in the world, the autonomic nervous system creates physiological events such as muscular tension, a rise in heart rate, perspiration, and dryness of the mouth. Emotions, then, are feelings which come about as a result of these physiological changes, rather than being their cause.
Term
Reflex arc
Definition
Rooting reflex, grasp reflex, babinski reflex

A reflex arc is the neural pathway that mediates a reflex action. In higher animals, most sensory neurons do not pass directly into the brain, but synapse in the spinal cord. This characteristic allows reflex actions to occur relatively quickly by activating spinal motor neurons without the delay of routing signals through the brain, although the brain will receive sensory input while the reflex action occurs. A reflex action is an instant movement caused by your stimulus. There are two types of reflex arc - autonomic reflex arc (affecting inner organs) and somatic reflex arc (affecting muscles).
Term
fight or flight
Definition
threat=increased heart rate respiration blood pressure, shut down digestion, cortisol realease, get more energy to skeletal muscles to flee.
Term
parasympathetic physiological response
Definition
slows heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases you digestion, and elimination.
Term
sympathetic physiological response
Definition
from the adrenal gland, release cortisol, fight or flight, increase energy, decrease blood sugar, crash after wards!!
Term
parts of a neuron
Definition
nucleus, dendrites, cell body, axon, axon hillock, myeline sheath, terminal buttons of axon

Term
Midbrain-simple
Definition
helps coordinate movement patters, sleep and arousal
Term
midbrain-advanced
Definition
neural centers-orient eye and body movements, in response to auditory and visual stimuli
Term
midbrain-pathology
Definition
Contains a small structure involved in dopamine production, when damgaged leads to parkinsons disease,

Contains PART of the Recticular formation which filters incoming sensory information and arouses other areas of the brain when somthing hppens that dmands their attention. Damage/abnormalities=ADHD or worse permanent coma
Term
Hind brain-fcn
Definition
automatic behaviors, survival responses.
Term
Hindbrain-pathology
Definition
Contains medulla(carry info from body)
Pons-respiration, sleeping, etc
cerebellum, (fine muscle movement , balance)
Term
Forebrain-fcn
Definition
3 components thalamus, hypothalmus, limbic system, cerebral cortex,
information-integration, learning,control sex,thrist, agrgression,memory, complex behaviors
Term
forebrain-pathology
Definition
-damage to front part, impair, social and emotion heavior, persistant comma, (teri Shivo)
Term
cerebellum
Definition
controls fine muscle movement and balance, equlibrium+balance, basic memory, sensory, cognitive and language tasks
Term
brainstem
Definition
regulates, hindbrain, midbrain, forebrain, regulates, heartbeat, and respiation.
Term
cerebral cortex
Definition
wrinkled outer layer, complex behaviors, higher mental process, deeply think(TERI SHIVO)
Term
Broca's aphasia
Definition
Broca's area in left frontal lobe controls speech

damage=inablity to speak but can understand written and spoken
Term
Wernikes aphasia
Definition
Wernickes' area,=language comprehension. cant understand what is read of heard but can speak ok
Term
Corpus collosum
Definition
primary connection to left and right hemispheres, communication between hemishpers
Term
Hemispheric specialization
Definition
denotes specialized fcns of each section
Left=language fcns,analytical, controls right side
right=nonverbal abilities, synthetic(combines things to form whole)
