Term
what is Adverse Reaction to Food in Cats and Dogs?
is it common?
Definition
Non-seasonal, pruritic skin disease associated with the ingestion of a certain substance in the diet.
Not common in the Gen population
Term
what is the pathophysiology of Adverse Reaction to Food? (ARF)...what kinda rxn, where does it occur, and what is sensitization period?
Definition
-evidence of involvement of Types I, III, and IV
hypersensitivity reactions.
- Rxn may occur at the mucosa or be a rxn to an
absorbed allergen
-A long (months to yrs) sensitization period is
required!!!)
Term
what are common offending antigens in the US for ARF in dogs and cats?
Definition
dogs-beef, dairy, chicken, wheat, egg, corn, soy
cats-fish, beef, dairy
Term
ARF signalment
Definition
-any age but more common in young
-no sex or breed predisposition in dogs
-Siamese cats may be predisposed
-More common in atopic dogs than non-atopic
dogs
Term
Primary lesions from ARF
Definition
none
Term
secondary lesions from ARF result from.....
and may cause______signs
Definition
-secondary lesions result from PRURITUS
-may also cause GI signs:
increased frequency of defecation, loose stools,
and thin body condition
Term
what is the distribution of ARF in dogs
Definition
variable but often includes
-otitis externa
-axillae
-groin
can also cause non-pruritic recurrent SP
Term
what is the distribution os ARF in cats?
Definition
variable but usually:
-head
-neck
but may be generalize...CRUSTING IS PROMINENT
Term
what are DDX for ARF
Definition
other pruritic dzs (esp FAD, ectoparasites, and atopy)
Term
what is the only accurate test to Dx ARF?
Definition
Feeding trial is the only accurate test
Term
What is the Method of feeding trials in ARF?
Definition
1. choice of diets
2. must read food labels carefully
3. NO other foods (chewable
medications/supplements, treats, rawhides, etc)
4. DURATION OF TRIAL: at least 8 weeks
5. VERIFY IMPROVEMENT BY RECHALLENGE WITH
ORIGINAL FOOD
6. Provocative testing to identify specific allergens
7. Note: during first few weeks of the trial, the
patient may require some treatments for 2ndary
infections and/or symptomatic therapy for pruritus
Term
in a feeding trial, what do you look at for the choice of diet?
Definition
1. PREFERRED METHOD: 1 PROTEIN, 1 CHO (both
novel to the patient)
2. Hydrolyzed protain diets: have not been
extensively tested in food allergic dogs/cats
w/skin dz
Term
how do you manage ARF patients?
Definition
avoid the allergy causing food
Term
KEY POINT FOR ARF:
what are factors that may help distinguish food allergy from atopy?
Definition
-Perennial pruritus from the initial onset
-may not respond to steroids
-can occur at any age
-may have GI signs
-may present with otitis externa as the only CS
Term
Is ARF common in horses?
Definition
Rare in horses
Term
ARF disease in horses is similar to dogs/cats, except for what two things?
Definition
1. CS may be SEASONAL OR NON-SEASONAL
(depending on feeding practices)
2. Urticaria is more common in horses
