Cadre Party 
Definition
An organization that is run by a small number of leaders and activists with little or broad public participation. They become active mainly during campaigns as their goal is to get a candidate and find what voters will find attractive. Most American parties are Cadre Parties.

Partisan 
Definition
Individuals that identify themselves with a party, can include candidates and voters alike. When you identify yourself with a party, it shows that you have set views and fundamental core values. This however, has split Congress heavily, especially after 1994.

Federalists
Definition
1 of the first political parties. Born out of the debate of what structure the new gov't of the U.S would take. 1 of their main arguments was for a strong central gov't. Well known Federalists include: Hamilton & Jay. The current debate between Dem & Rep traces back to this.

Multi-Party Systems
Definition
In this system multiple parties have the ability to gain control. Its almost always found in Parliamentary systems. Often times, parties are forced to build coalitions even though they may have opposing views. If a coalition cant be formed or if it is and it fails, there is no effective gov't

Two-Party System
Definition
Doesn't mean that there is only 2 parties but only 2 have the most viable chances to win. Electoral success is almost impossible under any other party.

Duverge's Law
Definition
argues that single member districts with a plurality-vote system tend to favor a two-party system. discourages minor parties.

Third Parties
Definition
any party that is not one of the 2 major parties. they know they arent going to get elected but they still try to bring awareness to their main issues. sometimes voters will vote for this party as a protest

Definition
Made up of all the people who actually hold party jobs, volunteers included. They are basically the machinery of the party. They dont just support one member, they support the party as a whole. They promote all candidates and construct election strategies.

A disciplined pol. org led by a boss or a small group. they seek to win elections, maintain power and provide patronage jobs to party loyalists.

Definition
national leadership board of a party. they concern themselves with all elections, not just the presidency. they work with the state committees and they nominate candidates.

their concern is to elect member of their party to congress. they raise funds on a national level from donors whose focus is on congress as a whole. they also concentrate their money on where they are more likely to get the most profit.
