OJO: Compara "se despierta" (wakes up) and "se levanta" (gets up).

OJO: Use "se" because it's something she does to "herself."

OJO: "Se despierta" is an e>ie stem changer from despertarse, to awaken (yourself).

Todos están haciendo ejercicios.
Definition

"All (people) are doing exercises."

~Everyone is doing exercise.

OJO: "Todos" says "everyone" is all male or male and female.

OJO: "Everyone" is considered plural in Spanish, while we would say "everyone is."

OJO: "-iendo" means "-ing" for -er/-ir verbs.

OJO: Always use "estar" before an "-ing" verb because it's a condition; they will eventually stop doing the verb.

Hay ropa, discos compactos, películas y mucho más.
Definition

There are clothes, CDs, movies and a lot more.


OJO: "Hay" means "there is/there are" and talks about existing, being.

OJO: Remember "ropa" means "clothing" so it is always singular.

OJO: "Compactos" is an adjective that describes the "discos" so it has to come second in Spanish. But you can still call them "CDs" (ceh-dehs) in Spanish.

OJO: "Películas" has an accent.

OJO: Compare "mucho" (a lot) with "muy" (very).

OJO: "Más" has an accent.

Enfrente de Gigante venden tortillas.
Definition

In front of "Gigante" ("Giant" supermarket) they sell tortillas.

OJO: Notice spacing on "enfrente de."

OJO: "-illas" makes the "tortas" (cakes) "small cakes."

COGNADOS: "Venden," a vendor, vending machine all have to do with selling.

OJO: Remember that the U.S. is rare for using pounds to measure weight instead of the metric kilogram. 1 kg=2,2 lbs., so a 110 lb. person weighs 55 kg.

OJO: Remember the connections between weight and money. lbs., Libra (horoscope sign symbolized by a scale), English "pound" as money vs. our "pound" as weight is just like the "peso" is the Mexican unit of money, "pesas" are weights, "pesar" means to weigh, ¡Qué pesado! means "What a drag!," etc.)

OJO: Note "volumen" is masculine.

OJO: Use "está" because loudness is a condition that can change.

OJO: Compare "muy" (very) and "mucho" (a lot).

COGNADOS: "Fuerte," a fort, having fortitude, to force, playing music "forte" all have to do with strength.

OJO: Notice the verb changes because it is a command.

COGNADOS: "Bajen," Baja California, "debajo de la mesa" all have to do with lower, under, down.

OJO: "Falling" asleep is something you do to yourself, like waking up or getting up.
OJO: "Se duerme" is an o>ue stem changer from dormirse, to fall asleep.
COGNADOS: "Se duerme," "dormitorio," college dormitories, dormant volcano all have to do with sleeping.
