Term
Land plants
Definition
-Water is limiting
- Carbon dioxide is in a gaseos form in the air
- Need their own structural support
- Celicate reproductive system at risk
- Pollination can occur so variation is easier
Term
Aquatic plants
Definition
-Water is in Abundance
- Dissolved carbonate ions in the water
- Supported by their buoncy in water
Term
Features of land plants
Definition
-Cuticle: Is the waxy waterproof layer on the leaf surface, restricts water loss by transpiration.
-Stomata: Pores on the underside of the leaf which open to let gases in and out. Open in the presence of water (become turgid) and close in the absence of water.
-Vascular Tissue: Large land plants because of their size need a way of transporting water and nutrients (food) from the roots up to the leaves (diffusing between cells is too slow). Thus phloem and xylem are used.
-Xylem: Series of (Tracheids) Vascular tissue covered in lignin which carries water up to the leaves. Use adhesion, cohesion, capillarity and osmotic pressure from the roots to move water up the plant.
-Phloem: Vascular tissue used to carry nutrients (food) in water up and down the plant.
-Root Hairs: Tiny appendages attached to roots which dramatically increase surface area.
Term
Liver wart(non-vascular plant 1)
Definition
- Hepatophyta
- Live in moist and shady habitats
- Flat and have stems with small leaflets.
Term
Hornworts(non-vascular plant 2)
Definition
-Anthocerotophyta
- Small group that are particulary algal like.
-undergo limited amount of photosynthesis.
Term
Mosses(non-vascular plant 3)
Definition
Gametophytes consist of small leafy stems and some have evolutionary precursors to xylem and phloem. - . After an egg is fertilised by a sperm a sporophyte (2n) develops a long stalk (seta) with a capsule in which meiosis takes place to produce spores. - The capsule cap (operculum) opens and closes in response to humidity and mediate spore release. - They don’t have roots at any stage of growth. - Spends a small proportion of its life as a diploid organism.
Term
Peat Moss(Sphagnum)
Definition
- Highly water absorbing
- stores water and exchanges ions in the alpine area.
- Wound dressing
-fuel and alcohol
Term
Ferns (Filicophyta)
Definition
- Contain roots and vascular tissue for water uptake.
- It has a cuticle
- The sporophyte dominates and sexual reproduction reliant on free water(motile)
- ferns spend an even amount of their lives as diploid and haploid organims.
Term
Cycads ( non- flowering plant 1)
Definition
-form palm like trees
Term
Conifers (non-flowering plant 2)
Definition
-largest and longest lived organisms in the world.
- Joshua tree
- ecologiacal and economical value.
-Pollen is protected in a solid cone.
-Cone opens during pollen dispersal (wind) to expose the pollen.
-The opened cone (female ovule) is then fertilised by pollen (sperm) from other cones.
Term
Ginko (non-flowering plant3)
Definition
- Only one species in china
- used for horticulture.
Term
Gnetales(non-flowering plant4)
Definition
-Most closely related to angiospems.
Term
Monocotyledons (flowering plant 1)
Definition
-Mostly herbaceous plants
-Leaves have parallel veins
-Fibrous roots
-Most flower parts come in multiples of 3
-Have one embryonic leaf
Term
Dicotyledons(flowering plant 2)
Definition
-Mostly woody plants
-Leaves have branched veins
-Tap roots
-Most flower parts come in multiples of 4 or 5
-Have two embryonic leaves
-Have vascular tissue of xylem and phloem. (Thin walled)
