Pituitary Gland Hormones of the Posterior Lobe Storage |

|
Term
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) |
|
Definition
ACTH's principal function is to stimulate the adrenal glands (located near the kidneys) to secrete a group of steroid hormones called glucocorticoids. It is only effective if the adrenal gland is still functioning. Today, ACTH is given by IM or IV and is often prescribed to reduce inflammation (tenderness and swelling caused by infection, injury, or illness) and to relieve pain. It is used for MS, Organ Transplants, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and Cancer. Sometimes results in the feeling of euphoria. |
