Term
How do you determine the filtered load? |
|
Definition
Plasma concentration times the GFR |
|

Term
What are the two main points of the facilitated diffusion transport systems? |
|
Definition
1. prior to the inflection or saturation point, everything is being reabsorbed and secreted efficiently and 2. once past the saturation point, the excretion rate and filtration rates become proportional |

Term
How does glucose filtration relate to Na filtration? |
|
Definition
When Na is reabsorbed, it causes an increase in GFR. As GFR is increased, there is an increased flow through the glomerulus causing exposure of more transporters within the epithelium which were not present under normal conditions. |

Term
|
Definition
A Na/Glucose cotransporter which transports from teh tubular lumen into the cell |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
Further down the proximal tubule |

Term
What happens to an animal loaded with NaCl in terms of glucose transport? |
|
Definition
One would think that the NaCl would increase GFR and thus increase glucose transport. This is incorrect. The kidneys decrease their rate of Na reabsorption so that Na can be excreted. Anything that decreases Na reabsorption, also decreases glucose reabsorption. |
