Term
Who does not perform arterial punctures?
Definition
Phlebotomisits
Term
Why are ABGs collected?
Definition
Used in the diagnosis and management of respirator disorders. Provide information about a patient's oxygenation, ventilation.
Term
Define collateral circulation
Definition
the site is supplied with blood from more than one artery, so that circulation can be maintained if one vessel is obstructed or damaged.
Term
What is the primary site-selection criteria for arterial punctures?
Definition
Collateral circulation
Term
What is the modified Allen Test?
Definition
measuring the pulse/ pressure in both arteries on the wrist. (radial and ulnar)
Term
What are the 4 arterial puncture sites in order of choice?
Definition
1. Radial
2. Brachial
3. Femoral
Term
What is the collateral artery of the radial
Definition
Ulnar
Term
What do you do if the ulnar blood flow is weak?
Definition
Do not puncture the radial artery.
Term
Why is the radial artery preferred?
Definition
It is close to the surface and lies on bone which allows for easy compression to avoid hematoma
Term
What is the disadvantage of the Brachial Artery?
Definition
Its deeper than the radial and has no underlying ligaments or bone to support compressions and a hematoma will form, close to the basilic vein
Term
What is a disadvantage of the radial artery?
Definition
It's small
Term
What is an advantage to the Brachial artery?
Definition
It's large and easy to palpate and is preferred when large volumes of blood must be collected.
Term
What is an advantage to the Femoral artery?
Definition
Its the largest artery used for arterial puncture. Sometimes the only site for patients who are hypovolemic(low blood volume) or have low cardiac output or during cardiac resuscitation.
Term
What is a disadvantage of the Femoral artery?
Definition
Poor circulation, close to the vein, increase of infection b/c of pubic hair, plaque buildup dislodging on older patients, risk of hematoma or hemorrhage.
Term
Where is the femoral artery located?
Definition
In the groin lateral to the pubis bone (inner thigh)
Term
Arterial sites on infants:
Definition
Umbilical arteries
Term
What is the needle angle for ABGs?
Definition
45 deg
Term
What type of syringe is used in ABG collection?
Definition
Heparinized syringe
