- Can be used emergency tx for hyperthyroidism/thyroid storm (high amts of I suppress secretion of thyroxine from the thyroid)
- Has been used topically to tx sporotrichosis.
- Symptomatic tx of erythema nodosum
- Thyroid protection during medical tx - admin non-radioactive potassium iodide prior to nuclear medicine scans to ensure that iodide from these radiopharmaceuticals is not sequestered by the normal affinity of the thryoid for iodide.
- Protection of the thyroid from radioactive fall out. Protective effect of KI lasts approximately 24 hours.
