What is histamine?

 

Definition

A physically active substance released from mast cells as part of an allergic reaction in humans.  

 

It stimulates gastric secretion and causes dilation of capillaries, constrictionof bronchial smooth muscle, and decreased blood pressure.

What is an Antihistamine?
Definition

A drug that combats the histamine released during an allergic reaction by blocking the action of the histamine on the tissue.

 

Antihistamines do NOT stop the formation of histamine nor do they stop the allergic reaction. - it just protects tissues from histamine effects.  (Blocks te receptor site)

Initial Dose: 5mg slow IVP over 1 to 2 mins.  Should be diluted in 5mg of sterile water or normal saline PTA

 

Repeated Doses: May be given every 5 min.  Most adults experience pain relief after 10-20mg.

Binds with the same receptors in the brain that narcotics normally attach to.  Narcan blocks the narcotic from binding with brain receptors.
