Term
Schedule I
Definition
Highest abuse potential. Highest physical and psychological dependence Limited or not therapeutic use. EX. Heroin, LSD, Methaqualone
Term
Schedule II
Definition
High abuse potential High physical and psychological dependence Therapeutic use with prescription Some drugs no longer used. EX. Morphine, PCP, Cocaine, Methadone, Methamphetamine
Term
Schedule III
Definition
Moderate abuse potential Moderate physical dependence High psychological dependence Therapeutic use with prescription EX. Anabolic steroids, Codeine w aspirin or Tylenol, Some Barbituates
Term
Schedule IV
Definition
Lower abuse potential Lower physical and psychological dependence Therapeutic with prescription. Ex. Dextropropxyphene, Pentazocine, Meprobamate, Diazepam, Alprazolam
Term
Schedule V
Definition
Lowest abuse potential, lowest physical & psychological dependence, Therapeutic use w/o prescription Ex. OTC cough medicines with codeine
Term
Category A
Definition
Adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women have not shown an increased risk of fetal abnormalities.
Term
Category B
Definition
Animal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus, however, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, or Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus.
Term
Category C
Definition
Animal studies have shown adverse effect and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, or No animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Term
Category D
Definition
: Studies, adequate well-controlled or observational, in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. However, the benefits of therapy outweigh the potential risk.
Term
Category X
Definition
Studies, adequate well-controlled or observational, in animals or pregnant women have demonstrated positive evidence of fetal abnormalities. The use of the product is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant.
Term
Absorption
Definition
Movement of drug particles from the GI tract to body fluids. Small Intestine, First Pass Effect
Term
Distribution
Definition
Process by which drugs are made available to body fluids and tissues. Effected by blood flow, tissue affinity (attraction) and protein binding (efficacy ability to work)
Term
Metabolism (biotransformation)
Definition
Primary liver, also GI tract. Liver disease can alter drug metabolism by inhibiting the drug-metabolizing enzymes. Accumulation may = toxicity
Term
Excretion (elimination)
Definition
Kidney’s primarily (Free, Water soluble, Unchanged)
Also hepatic metabolism, bile, feces, lungs, saliva, sweat, & breast milk.
Protein- bound drugs cannot be filtered through the kidneys.
Kidney disease = slowed impaired drug elimination, which may = toxicity
Decreased renal blood flow can alter drug excretion
