• Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
• Weak diuretic effect
• Alkalinizes urine; can cause systemic acidosis, hypokalemia
• Used for metabolic alkalosis, glaucoma, altitude sickness

Furosemide 

(Lasix, Salix)

• Loop Diuretic
• Inhibits NaCl reabsorption in thick ascending LOH
• Most effective, most widely used
• Can cause hypokalemia, may increase Ca loss
• Treat oliguric renal failure, CHF, acute pulmonary hypertension and EIPH

• Thiazide Diuretic
• Not as effective as loop diuretic
• Used for nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, udder edema, Ca containing uroliths

• Competitive Aldosterone Antagonist
• K sparing
• Decr Na/K pump activity, Decr NaCh, KCh
• Delayed onset of action, prolonged effect
• Mild diuresis, reduced K loss
• Usually used w/ loop diuretic

Triamterene

• Principal Cell NaCh blocker (blocks Epith NaCh)
• K sparing
• Immediate, mild diuresis
• Used w/ loop diuretic
