Heritability of personality - Minnesota twin studies |
|
Definition
- Over 100 twin pairs from all over the world (identical and non identical). - Some had been raised together, and some had been raised separately - Large number of individuals who were twins (some triplets involved) - Some had been raised together, and some had been raised separately - Over 100 twin pairs from all over the world (identical and non identical). - Looked at similarities between twins of the proportion of shared DNA and environments - Found that the environments of the twins who were raised separately tended to be pretty similar which made I difficult to work out differences based on environment - Study in the 1960s where families generally had a stay at home mum and working dad, or siblings already in the child - Measured heratibility in a scale from 0 to 1, 1 means completely inheritable while a 0 means that it is not inheritable - NOTE: Not talking about inheritability at an individual level, but instead at a nation level - Typically for most of their lives until that point. - 1 week of testing (Psych & Medical). |

Minnesota twin studies - Types of traits that have hereditability aspects to them are factors: |
|
Definition
- .23 Warmth - .36 Excitement seeking - .5 for work and leisure interests - .44-.8 for happiness
- Remember - heritability refers to populations, not individuals. - Heritability estimates are not fixed – changes in environment or in the gene pool can increase or decrease the percentage contribution of either factor |

Criticisms of Minnesota Twin Study |
|
Definition
- Criticized use of twins because mainly the twins that were separated the environments were quite similar, so couldn’t make a clear conclusion that a factor was inherited through genes or whether it was environmental - Even identical twins could be treated quiet differently or gravitate towards different types of people - Children create their own aspect of the environment e.g. temperament influences |
