1. Exposition

Definition
The first part of the plot diagram. The exposition sets the background for the story to take place. This can include; the setting, background information on characters, and tone.

2. Rising Action

Definition
The second part of the plot diagram. The rising action is the part of a story that introduces the conflict and when the character attempts to solve the problem but fails. This part of the plot diagram and story is meant to lead to the climax. Tensions increase in this part of the story.

3. Climax

Definition
The third part of plot diagram. This is considered the most tense or emotional part of a story. Also referred to as the turning point of the story, and where the conflict is altered (resolved or unresolved) for the protagonist.

4. Falling action

Definition
The fourth part of plot diagram. The loose ends of the story and the climax are resolved. Tensions are low at this point of the story as the conflict is being resolved.

5. Resolution

Definition
The last part of the plot diagram. The conflict is completely resolved and the story ends. All problems between the protagonist and characters is completely resolved.
