Causes uterine contraction

Indications:             

   Control of postpartum hemorrhage 

Contraindications:

 Hypersensitivity

Administration:

10 units in 1000 ml NS. Infuse at a rate of 20-30 gtts/min (titrate to reduction in bleeding)

Precautions:           

Oxytocin is to be administered only after delivery of the placenta for vaginal bleeding in excess of 500-1000 ml.

Note:    

Uterine massage and attempts at breast feeding should be applied prior to administration of Oxytocin.
