Breathing retraining: Pursed lip breathing to prolong exhalation, prevent bronchiolar collapse and prevent air trapping. Airway clearance techniques are taught by respiratory therapists. This technique involves the use of a bronchodilator followed by effective coughing (huff coughing) in order to remove secretions from the lungs. Chest physiotherapy: Percussion and vibration are used to loosen secretions and is followed by coughing to remove secretions from the airway. |

Apple juice [not cider], white & purple grape juice, and cranberry juice are examples of juices without pulp. Gatorade type sports drinks are OK, too.5. Tea without milk and without creamer products6. Coffee without milk and without creamer products7. Jello gelatin, but ONLY if it is home-made (and w/o fruit, of course). Most store-bought pre-made Jello contains material to impede dissolving at room/body temperature.8. Clear so-called "protein drinks" such as Kellogs "K2O" and others.9. Bullion cube broth, or Consume’ broth (but not canned chicken broth with fat in it) |

Post-op: Monitor vital signs, I&O, cardiac rhythm, assess/treat pain, advance diet as tolerated/ordered, encourage oral fluids as tolerated Monitor site for complications - Assess puncture site for bleeding, swelling, hematoma formation – apply pressure to the site, notify physician. Site care: change bandage over insertion site daily every 3 days; observe for excessive tenderness or swelling, redness. Patient/parent teaching: signs and symptoms bleeding or swelling at catheter site, bathing – older child/adult may shower usually next day; under 3 - sponge bath for 3 days post-procedure manual or adhesive closure methods Instruct patient/caregiver to call nurse and to apply pressure to site if bleeding or swelling occurs or B/4 sneezing, coughing, laughing or valsalva. Strict bedrest for 6-8 hours with affected leg straight. Patient may logroll to side if needed. Must be taught to notify RN before repositioning self. Prevention of infection – site care, site prep/hibiclens pre op, site prep before adhesive closure/preclose, clipping not shaving hair, antibiotics for high risk patients |
