Term

(pg. 5) "There's some scenery for those who think they have to have scenery."

Definition

This quote was at the very beginning when the stage manager is talking to the audience and setting up the story. He was relating the story to the audience. Theatre at the time was about showing off everything you had, and how much money you had. The stage manager was making a point that for those that think people need money and items to live, that there would be some, but the story would prove you didn't need all the little things and money to be happy.

Term

(pg. 9) "Goin' to be a great engineer, Joe was. But the war broke out and he died in France.-All that education for nothing."

Definition

The stage manager was telling the story of Joe Crowell to the audience. Joe was a very smart man, and was going to be very successful, but he died and all of his education was for nothing. The education was not wasted because it was the process and the final product that mattered. All the great experiences that he endured during his education made up his life, and it most certainly wasn't wasted.

Term

(pg. 24) "Very ordinary town if you ask me. Little better behaved than most. Probably a lot duller."

Definition

The stage manager was telling the audience that the town was very ordinary, and well behaved. He wants to make the point that the people in Grovers Corners know that they are very normal, and they realize that they are small compaired to the whole world. There aren't many people that are famous, but they are regular people, living regular lives.

Term

(pg. 25) "Oh, yes, everybody is - somethin' terrible. Seems like they spend most of their time talking about who's rich and who's poor."

Definition

Mr. Webb said this to the belligerent man. Mr. Webb is trying to let the audience know how stupid it is to judge people on how much money they have. It is the personality and what is on the inside that counts, not the appearence of someone. It is terrible that the world has to be that way, and people can't just love eachother for who they are.

Term

(pg. 26) "Its early afternoon. All 2,642 have had their dinners and all the dishes have been washed."

Definition

The stage manager is saying this to the audience. This is representing the routine lives of the people in Grovers Corners. Everyone is doing something at the same time, and they do it everyday, and they continue living ordinary lives.

Term

(pg. 32) "Your pretty enough for all normal purposes."

Definition

Mrs. Webb says this to Emily. Emily and her mother had a conversation that many girls have with their mothers. Emily wanted to know if she was pretty, and her mother reasurred her that she was pretty enough for all normal purposes. Normal purposes include getting married, and having kids, and living a healthy life with the man she loves.

Term

(pg. 39) "Naturally, I didn't want to say a word about it in front of those others, but now we're alone-really, its the worst scandal that ever was in this town!"

Definition

Mrs. Soames is saying this to Mrs. Gibbs after chorus practice. She is eager to gossip with Mrs. Gibbs, but Mrs. Gibbs doesn't want to gossip. This shows that some people in Grovers Corners want to gossip, and some hate to gossip, just like in our own lives.

Term

(pg. 46) "I never told you about that letter Jane Crofut got from her minister when she was sick. He wrote Jane a letter and on the envelope the address was like this: It said:Jane Crofut; The Crofut Farm; Grovers Corners; Sutton County; New Hampshire; United States of America; Continent of North America; Western Hemisphere; The Earth; The Solar System; The Universe; The Mind of God.

Definition

Rebecca is saying this to George while they are looking at the stars. This a paradox because it seems crazy for someone to write something like that on an envelope, but it is true and it shows, how small Rebecca and George are compaired to the Mind of God. But the letter still got there the same. Rebecca and George are small but greatly important to the world.

Term

(pg. 46) "What's so funny about that?"

Definition

George says this to Rebecca when she tells him about the letter that Jane Crofut got from her minister when she was sick. George doesn't think that it was funny because he knows that he is small compaired to the United States. He knows Grovers Corners with only 2,642, people isn't very big, and it might need a lot of details for a letter to get to the small town.
