|
|
Term
|
Definition
Caused by tumor w/in spinal cord or vertebrae collapse fm tumor degradation of bone
Back pain may occur prior to nerve deficit
Often metastatic tumor
Tx includes high dose corticosteroids, radiation, surgery, and/or external braces |

Term
|
Definition
- Occurs most often with bone metastasis
- Bone CA causes release of Ca into bloodstream
- Lung, head and neck, kidney or lymph node CA secretes parathyroid hormone - causes bone to release Ca
- Decreased mobility and dehydration = exacerbate hypercalcemia
- Oral hydration may be only tx needed
- Life-threatening hypercalcemia - dialysis temp.

Term
Superior Vena Cava Syndrome (SVC) |
|
Definition
- Suppression or obstruction by tumor or clots
- Painful & life-threatening
- Blockage of venous return from head, neck and upper trunk
- Early manifestations upon awakening = facial edema and collar tightness
- Progression = engorged vessels/ erythema of upper body
- Late manifestations = hemorrhage, cyanosis, AMS, decreased CO, hypotension
- Tx = metal stent (may become compressed also)

Term
Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS) |
|
Definition
- Increase of cells being destroyed = K and purines released
- Hyperkalemia and hyperuricemia
- Hydration!!! - 3-5 L of fluid day before, of and after treatment
- May need antiemetics, diuretics, and purine excretion promoters
