Term
Visual acuity vs visual field test
Definition
acuity (with corrective lens): cover one eye, read Snellen Chart
field (without correction): patient looks at your nose, hold fingers in their periphery
Term
A pituitary tumor causes what kind of visual field defect?
Definition
bitemporal (lacking vision in the lateral sides of R & L visual fields)
Term
How do you check the pupils?
Definition
efferent: shine light in one eye, then the other; look for equal pupil constriction
afferent: shine light in one eye then immediately in the other, pupil size should stay the same
accomodation: patient focuses, then looks away and back. Eyes should turn in, and pupil should get smaller as they focus from far to near
Term
What is responsible for most of the refractive power of the eye?
Definition
the cornea
Term
What other levels of vision are there, if the patient cannot read the largest letters on the eye chart?
Definition
(best to worst)
count fingers vision
hand motion vision
light perception vision
no light perception vision
Term
Visual acuity tests what part of the eye?
Definition
fovea
Term
What nerve innervates the obicularis oris, and what is the function of this muscle?
Definition
CN VII
closes the eyelid
Term
What nerve innvervates the levator palpebri, and what is the function of this muscle?
Definition
CN III
levator palpebri opens the eyelid
Term
What is the function of the superior tarsal (Muellers muscle), and what nerve innervates it?
Definition
helps elevate the lid, sympathetic innervation
Term
PERRLA
Definition
Pupils Equal & Round Reactive to Light and Accommodation
Term
What is the most common cause of unilateral or bilateral proptosis?
Definition
graves disease
Term
Explain the pupillary light reaction.
Definition
afferent: light travels along the optic nerve, 50% crosses at the chiasm, impulse enters L & R Edinger-westphal nucleus
efferent: L & R CNIII to ciliary ganglion>pupil constricts
Term
Marqu-Gunn Pupil
Definition
afferent pupillary defect
afferent lesion
Term
What is the innervation of the extraocular muscles?
Definition
Sup Oblique: CN IV
Lateral Rectus: CN VI
all the rest: CN III
