What is aplastic anemia?
Definition
It is caued by a failure to produce red blood cells.  This can be a result of a deficiency in iron, vitamin B12, or chronic disease such as renal failure.

Below what precentage of hematocrit with anemic patients become symptomatic?

Definition
Anemia is classified as a hematocrit level of 37% or less in women, and 40% or less in men. 

But most anemic patients become symptomatic below 30%.

What type of issues do sickle cell patients deal with?
Definition
  • They will suffer vascular occlusions because of the abnormally shaped cells get stuck.
  • Drops in levels of hemoglobin
  • Infections due to their immunosupressed state.

  • High Flow oxygen to maximize saturation
  • Analgesia for moderate to severe pain
  • Crystalloid Fluid challenge to combat dehydration.

Definition
It is an abnormally high hematocrit, over 50%, due to high red blood cell production.

Definition
It can cause thrombosis, platelet dysfunction leading to abnormal bleeding, and the most sever case is congestive heart failure.

What is Hodgkins Lymphoma?
Definition
Also known as Hodgkin's Disease, it is a cancer of the lymph nodes that starts with one group of lymph nodes to another.

It is a painless, enlarged lymph nodes.

It is an abnormal decrease in the number of platelets, causing them to bruise and bleed abnormally.

What is multiple myeloma?
Definition
It is a cancerous disorder of plasma cells in the bone marrow which crowd the healthy cells - leading to the reduction in blood cell production.  This causes the patient to become anemic and prone to infection.

What is a normal white cell count?
Definition
5000 to 9000 per cubic millimeter of blood.

A count of 10,8000 to 23,000 per cubic millimeter suggests bacterial infection.

A count greater than 30,000 per cubic milimeter is called a leukemoid reactions and is suggestive of luekemia.
