Jackson        1           Setting

• Begins on June 27, 1948.
• People gather between the bank and the post office for the Lottery.
• Starts at 10:00 in the morning.
• The children gathered first, the boys playing and the girls talking among themselves
• Then the men began to gather, followed by the women.

Jackson        1-2       The Black Box

• The Postmaster came in carrying the black box and a three legged stool.
• Everyone distanced themselves from the box.
• Two men came and held the box steady while the names inside were stirred around.
• The box was put into use before Old Man Warner was born.

Jackson      2-3        The Lottery

•  There were the lists to make up--of heads of families. heads of households in each family. members of each household in each family.
• There used to be a recited saying and a ritual salute that the lottery official had to learn.
• They went through the crowd making sure everyone was present.

Jackson     3         The Lottery

• They read the list of names, and the head of the families went first.
• Bill Hutchinson drew the wrong piece of paper in the lottery.
• Tessie drew the piece of paper with the black dot on it also.

Jackson      7      The Lottery Losers

• Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her.
• Tessie kept saying "It wasn't fair."
• Then the Hutichinson family got stoned.
