- Jack tries to turn everyone against Ralph, but fails and eventually breaks off from the group to be by himself
- some boys sneak off during the night to join Jack's group
- Jack's group kill a pig and put the head on the stick, offering it to the beast
- Jack's tribe raids the beach where Piggy and Ralph are
- Simon comes in contact with the pig's head on a stick, or "Lord of the Flies" it tells him that they will never be rescued
