Definition
The movement of people to a place. People came to the U.S. largely from Europe in the 1800s.

Nativists
Definition
People who were opposed to immigration (mostly in cities). They feared immigrants taking their homes and jobs and bringing new cultures to the U.S.

Definition
Immigrants and the Industrial Revolution brought more and more people to cities in the mid-1800s.

As the population of cities increases, so does the amount of crime, overcrowding, pollution and risk of fire.

Forming in the mid-1800s, this new group of people had enuigh money that they did not have to work 12 days in cities. They could buy homes in nicer areas an had time and money to take in leisure activities such as shopping and horse racing.

Poorly built and maintained homes that housed the lower classes in cities. Famous for overcrowded, dirty, and dangerous conditions.

Woman who sought to reform (improve) conditions for prisoners and the mentally ill in the mid-1800s.

Definition
Headed by wealthy women, this movement tried to get Americans to cut back on alcohol consumption. Leaders were Carrie Nation and Susan B. Anthony.

Similar to high schools of today, they pushed public education past the eighth grade. Sought to produce graduates who would make better teachers for the nation's children.

A movement to rid the United States of slavery in the early 1800s. A few leaders were Frederick Douglass and John Brown.

William Lloyd Garrison
Definition
A Connecticut preacher, he sought to end slavery by giving speeches, writing newspapers, and creating the American Anti-Slavery Society.

Definition
An escaped slave who taught himself to read and write, he traveled the U.S. and Britain speaking out against slavery. He was, perhaps, the most influential abolitionist of all and a resident of Rochester, NY.

Harriet Tubman
Definition
An escaped slave herself, she was a very succesful "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, leading at least 70 to freedom in about 19 trips to the North.

Definition
A secret system of safe homes, this was a way for slaves to escape to Canada. Very little is known about this because of the extreme secrecy they operated under.

Seneca Falls Convention
Definition
Held in 1848 in Seneca Falls, NY, this was the first large gathering of the women's rights movement. Lucretia and Elizabeth Cady Stanton headed the group which created the Declaration of Sentiments calling for women's suffrage.

Susan B. Anthony
Definition
This women's rights leader lived in Rochester, NY. Being a wealthy and well educated woman, she was able to travel the U.S. giving speeches on behalf of women's rights, especially suffrage.
