What is a Neuron? (For this set I suggest that you look at the diagram) |
Definition
(Every other card in this set is parts of a neuron) Basic unit of the nervous system that conducts electrical impulses. Communicates with other neurons, organs, and muscles |
Term
Definition
Part of the neuron that receive information from other cells. |

Term
What is a cell body(soma)? |
Definition
Transmits info. from the dendrite. |
Term
Definition
A long extension containing cytoplasm that conducts electrical impulses. |
Term
Definition
At the end of the axon this releases neurotransmitter that continue impulses to another neuron. |
Term
Definition
Insulation around the axon that speeds up an electrical impulse. |

Term
What is a Node of Ranvie? |
Definition
Gaps between the Myelin Sheath. Impulses travel from node to node. |

What is Resting Potential? |
Definition
When it is not conducting electrical impulses. Inside cell is negative 70mV. Pumps out Na+ (gated channels are closed)K+ gated channels are open. |
Term
What is Action Potential? |
Definition
Stimulus causes a positive charge in the membrane potential of the axon. Na+ channels are open, K+ channels are closed. Na+ floods into the axon and swings to +40mV |
Term
Definition
Na+ gates are closed stopping the flood. K+ gates are open allowing K+ out of the cell. Na+/K+ pump re-established. |
