Visual Pathway
Definition

Light stimulus received by photoreceptors in the retina

Leaves the eye through the optic nerve

Via lateral/temporal fibers and medial/nasal fibers

The lateral/temporal fibers travel ipsilaterally

The medial/nasal fibers cross in the optic chiasm and travel contralaterally

After the optic chiasm, the axons of these fibers are referred to as the optic tract

Optic tract travels to the (LGN) Lateral Geniculate Nucleus

Projections from the LGN are called optic radiations which will travel back to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe

From there information is projected to through parietal and temporal areas via ventral and dorsal streams

Term
Cornea
Definition
convex shape – the transparent part of the eye that allows light to come in and directs toward the iris and pupil
Term
Iris
Definition
the colored part of the eye
Term
Pupil
Definition

hole in the center of the iris that allows light to travel through the lens (convex) to the retina

Term
Fovea
Definition

is composed of closely packed cones in the center of the macula- divides eye into temporal and nasal sides

Term

Term
Right Visual Field → Left Side of Brain
Definition

The right nasal fiber sees the temporal area of the right visual field and projects info through the optic chiasm to the left side of the brain

Term
Left Visual Field → Right Side of Brain
Definition

The right temporal fiber sees the nasal area of the left visual field and projects info ipsilaterallyto the right side of the brain
