Term
What motor pathways have relays in the thalamic nuclei?
Definition
Motor pathways from the basal ganglia and cerebellum.
Term
What sensory pathways synapse in the dorsal thalamus?
Definition
All, except some olfactory.
Term
Internal medullary lamina separates what?
Definition
Dorsomedial nucleus and the lateral component of the thalamus. Anteriorly bifurcates to enclose the anterior nuclear group.
Term
What are the dorsal nuclei of the lateral thalamus?
Definition
Lateral dorsal, lateral posterior, and pulvinar nuclei.
Term
What are the ventral nuclei of the lateral thalamus?
Definition
Ventral anterior, ventral lateral, and ventral posterior (medial and lateral).
Term
What is also visible what the anterior nucleus of the thalamus is visible?
Definition
The ventral anterior nucleus first. One section back, the ventral lateral nucleus.
Term
What is also visible when the dorsomedial nucleus is visible?
Definition
The ventral lateral, VPLN, and the VMLN. Also the Intralaminar nuclei (cemtromedian and parafascicular). Also the lateral dorsal nucleus.
Term
What is visible when the pulvinar is visible?
Definition
The medial geniculate and the lateral geniculate nucleus.
Term
Input to the ventral anterior nucleus?
Definition
Motor - primary input from basal ganglia.
Term
Input to the ventral lateral nucleus?
Definition
Motor - from the cerebellum.
Term
Input to the posterolateral nucleus?
Definition
Somatosensory relay nucleus for body: dorsal column, spinal thalamic tracts.
Term
Inputs to ventral posteromedial nucleus?
Definition
Somatosensory relay nucleus for head: trigeminothalamic tract.
Term
Inputs to the lateral geniculate nucleus?
Definition
Visual input from the optic tract i processed in the lateral geniculate nucleus.
Term
Input to the medial geniculate nucleus?
Definition
Auditory input from brachium of the inferior colliculus processed in the medial geniculate nucleus.
Term
Inut to lateral dorsal nucleus?
Definition
Linked with anterior nuclei.
Term
Input to lateral posterior nucleus?
Definition
Linked with the pulvinar.
Term
Pulvinar?
Definition
Unkown. May be involved in "secondary" visual system.
Term
Tracts to the dorsomedial nucleus?
Definition
Input from limbic structures such as the amygdala projects to prefrontal cortex.
Term
Input to the centromedian and parafascicular nuclei?
Definition
Input from basal ganglia, cerebral cortex, cerebellum, collaterals of the spinothalamic, spinoreticulothalamic. Projections then go to different places (e.g. basal ganglia).
Term
Inputs to the Reticular Nucleus?
Definition
Collaterals from the thalamocortical and corticothalamic fibers. Contain GABAergic neurons that project to the thalamic nucleus. Modulcates thalamic forwarding to the cortex (along with reticular projections).
Term
Carona radiata and internal capsule: input or output fibers, or both?
Definition
Both.
Term
The crus cerebri is an extension of?
Definition
The internal capsule. Bundle of fibers between the lenticular nucleus and the thalamus and the head of the caudate.
Term
What type of fibers are found in the internal capsule?
Definition
Thalamocortical, corticothalamic, and all descending fibers to the brainstem and spinal cord.
Term
What are the five parts of the internal capsule?
Definition
Anterior limb, genu, posterior limb, sublenticular, retrolenticular.
Term
What is thalamic pain?
Definition
Posterior thalamic lesion.
Abnormal sensations. Intense pain triggered by somatosensory stimulation.
May involve one half of the body.
Resistant to drug tx
Other stimuli may be abnormal in intensity or modality - pleasant or unpleasant.
May be a dissociation between fast and slow pain systems (VPL, VPM vs IL).
Term
Thalamic Syndrome
Definition
Thalamic pain
Hemianesthesia - contralateral.
Sensory ataxia - loss of proprioception.
May have paralysis due to internal capsule damage.
May have involuntary movements due to BG damage.
