Definition

-Introjection: When one takes on the properties of a stronger individual or object in order to better cope with a difficult situation.

A defense mechanism. The masking of an unwanted feeling or desire by exaggerating the directly opposing tendency. The existence of a reaction-formation rather than a ‘normal’ emotion would be suspected where exaggeration, compulsiveness and inflexibility were observed. An example is a man who is obsessed with the opposition of pornography when he inwardly desires it.

Definition

The mind redirects feelings toward an object not felt to be dangerous or unacceptable to one that is safer or more acceptable. These feelings are against one outside of oneself in contrast to Projection, in which those feelings are against oneself.

 

For instance, a student snaps at his roommate when angry about his grade. Or a man who is angry at his boss takes it out on his wife, who slaps the child, disguising it as punishment.
