Term
aquifer [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
Permeable layers of underground rock, or sand that hold or transmit groundwater below the water table.

Term
artesian formation [image] [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
An artesian aquifer is a confined aquifer containing groundwater that will flow upwards through a well without the need for pumping. Water may even spurt out of the ground if the natural pressure is high enough. An aquifer provides the water for an artesian well. An aquifer is a layer of soft rock, like limestone or sandstone, that absorbs water from an inlet path.

Term
evapotranspiration [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
The process by which water re-enters the atmosphere through evaporation from the ground and transpiration by plants.

Term
geysers [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
A geyser is a type of hot spring that erupts periodically, ejecting a column of hot water and steam into the air.

Term
impermeable [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
Not easily penetrated. The property of a material or soil that does not allow, or allows only with great difficulty, the movement or passage of water or fluids.
Term
permeability [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
Ability of rock to transmit fluids through pore spaces.
Term
porosity [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
The volume of pore space in a rock, sediment or soil. Usually expressed as a percentage. This pore space can include openings between grains, fracture openings and caverns.

Term
water budget: usage / deficit / recharge / surplus [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
Water Budget: The water budget is a method for balancing the input and output of a system. It describes the income and the spending of the water in a region. Usage: The condition where withdrawal of water from the soil is greater then the rainfall.
Surplus - Condition of having rainfall greater then the need for moisture when the soil is already saturated. Recharge: Water added to an aquifer or other water body. An aquifer is recharged by precipitation in an area where the aquifer has a porous connection to the surface. Deficit: A soil moisture deficit occurs when the demand for water exceeds that which is actually available.

Term
water cycle [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
The hydrologic cycle is the never-ending movement of water from one part of the hydrosphere to another.
Term
water table [image] [image] [image] |
Definition
The surface below which the ground is saturated with water.
