rounded cavity on the right and left lateral sides of the pelvic bone
Term
Adduction
Definition
the movement of a limb toward the midline
Term
Ballottement
Definition
palpation technique used to detect fluid or examine floating body structures by using the hand to push against the body
Term
bursae
Definition
small, synovial fluid filled sacs that protect ligaments from friction

calcaneus
Definition
tarsal bone of the foot also known as the heel bone
Term
cartilaginous joint
Definition
bones joined by cartilage
Term
circumduction
Definition
movement of a limb in a circle
Term
depression
Definition
this is the movement in which the elevated part is moved downward to its original position
Term
dorsiflexion
Definition
flexion of the ankle so thatthe superior aspect of the foot moves in an upward direction
Term
elvation
Definition
lifting or moving superiorly along a frontal plane
Term
eversion
Definition
movement in which the sole of the foot is turned laterally
Term
extension
Definition
bending movement around a joint that increases the angle between the bone of the limb at the joint
Term
fibrous joint
Definition
bones joined by fibrous tissue
Term
flexion
Definition
bending movement that decreases the angle of the joint and brings the articulating bones closer together
Term
fracture
Definition
a partial or complete break in the continuity of the bone from trauma
Term
gliding
Definition
the simplest type of joint movements. one flat bone surface glides or slips over another similar surface. the bones are merely displaced in relation to one another.
Term
hallux valgus
Definition
great toe is abnormally adducted at the metatarsophalangeal joint
Term
hyperextension
Definition
bending of the joint beyond 180 degrees
Term
inversion
Definition
movement in which the sole of the foot is turned medially or inward
Term
joint
Definition
the point where two or more bones in the body meet
Term
kyphosis
Definition
exaggerated thoracic dorsal curve that causes asymmetry between the sides of the posterior thorax
Term
lordosis
Definition
exaggerated lumbar curve of the spine that compensates for pregnancy, obesity, or other skeletal changes
Term
opposition
Definition
movement of touching the thumb to the tips of the other fingers of the same hand. used to test carpal tunnel
Term
plantar flexion
Definition
extension of the ankle (pointing toes) away from the body
Term
pronation
Definition
movement of the forearm so that thepalm faces down posteriorly or inferiorly
Term
protraction
Definition
nonangular anterior movement in a transverse plane
Term
retraction
Definition
nonangular posterior movement in a transverse plane (opposite of protraction)
Term
scoliosis
Definition
lateral curvature of te lumbar or thoracic spine that is more common in children with neuromuscular problems
Term
subluxation
Definition
partial dislocation of the bones in a joint such as the head of the radius that occurs when a child is being dangled by his or her hands
Term
supination
Definition
movement of the forearm so that the palm faces up anteriorly or superiorly
Term
synovial joint
Definition
bones seperated by a fluid filled joint cavity
Term
tendons
Definition
tough fibrous bands that attach muscle to bone or muscle to muscle
Term
tophi
Definition
gout related hard nodules that may appear over the joint

may result from congenital abnormality, rheumatic conditions, compression freactures, or other disease processes including syphilis, tuberculosis and rickets

Term

Definition

scoliosis

may occur congenitally or as a result of disease or injury. in addition it can occur from habitual improper posture, unequal leg length, weakening of masculature, and chronic head tilting in visual disorders. functional scoliosis is flexible however it is visble when standing. structural scoliosis is irreversible and visble when standing and bending

Definition

lordosis

occurs in pregnancy and in obesity to compensate for the protuberance of the abdomen

Rotator Cuff Tear

more common after age 40, rotator cuff tears arise from repeated impingement, injury, or falls. findings include muscle atrophy of the infraspinatus and suprasinatus, tenderness, and pain. impaired abduction of the glenohumeral joint occurs with a complete tear of the supraspinatus tendon
