Innervation:  Facial n.

Term
Occipitalis
Definition
Origin:  Superior nuchal line and temporal bone

Insertion:  Galea aponeurotica

Action:  Retracts scalp; fixes galea aponeurotica so frontalis can act on eyebrows

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Orbicularis Oculi
Definition

Origin:  Lacrimal bone, adjacent regions of frontal bone and maxilla, medial angle  of eyelids

Insertion:  Upper and lower eyelids, skin around margin of orbit

Action:  Sphincter of the eyelids; closes eye in blinking, squinting, and sleep; aids in flow of tears across eye

Innervation:  Facial n.

Term
Corrugator Supercilii
Definition
Origin:  Medial end of Supraorbital margin

Action:  Draws eyebrows medially and downward in frowning and concentration; reduces glare of bright sunlight

Innervation:  Facial N.
Term
Orbicularis Oris
Definition
Origin:  Modiolus of mouth

Insertion:  Submucosa and dermis of lips

Action:  Facial n.

Innervation:  Encircles mouth, closes lips, protrudes lips as in kissing; uniquely developed in humans for speech
Term
Levator Labii Superioris
Definition
Origin:  Zygomatic bone and maxilla near inferior margin of orbit

Insertion:  Muscles of upper lip

Action:  Elevates and everts upper lip in sad, sneering, or serious expressions

Innervation:
Term
Zygomaticus Major
Definition
Origin:  Zygomatic bone

Definition
Origin:  Zygomatic bone

Insertion:  Muscles of upper lip

Action:  Elevates upper lip, exposes upper teeth in smiling or sneering

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Risorius
Definition
Origin:  Zygomatic arch, fascia near ear

Insertion:  Modiolus of mouth

Action:  Draws angle of mouth laterally in expressions of laughing, horror, or disdain

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Depressor Labii Inferioris
Definition
Origin:  Near mental protuberance

Insertion:  Skin and mucosa of lower lip

Action:  Draws lower lip downward and laterally in chewing and expressions of melancholy or doubt

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Mentalis
Definition
Origin:  Mandible near inferior incisors

Insertion:  Skins of chin at mental protuberance

Action:  Elevates and protrudes lower lip in drinking, pouting, and expressions of doubt or disdain; elevates and wrinkles skin of chin

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Buccinator
Definition
Origin:  Alveolar processes on lateral surfaces of maxilla and mandible

Insertion:  Orbicularis oris; submucosa of ckeek and lips

Action:  Compresses cheek against teeth and gums; directs food between molars; retracts cheek from teeth when mouth is closing to prevent biting cheek; expels air and liquid

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Platysma
Definition
Origin:  Fascia of deltoid and pectoralis major

Insertion:  Mandible; skin and subcutaneous tissue of lower face

Action:  Draws lower lip and angle of mouth downward in expressions of horror or surprise; may aid in opening mouth widely

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Temporalis
Definition
Origin:  Temporal lines and temporal fossa of cranium

Insertion:  Coronoid process and anterior border of mandibular ramus

Action:  Elevation, retraction, and lateral and medial excursion of the madible

Innervation:  Mandibular n.
Term
Masseter
Definition
Origin:  Zygomatic arch

Insertion:  Lateral surface of mandibular ramus and angle

Action:  Elevation of the mandible, with smaller roles in protraction, retraction, and lateral and medial excursion

Innervation:  Facial n.
Term
Medial Pterygoid
Definition
Origin:  Medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate, palatine bone, lateral surface of maxilla near molar teeth

Insertion:  Medial surface of mandibular ramus and angle

Action:  Elevation, protraction, and lateral and medial excursion of the mandible

Innervation:  Mandibular n.
Term
Lateral Pterygoid
Definition
Origin:  Lateral surfaces of lateral pterygoid plate and greater wing of sphenoid

Insertion:  Neck of mandible (just below condyle); articular disc and capsule of temporomandibular joint

Action:  Depression (in wide opening of the mouth), protraction, and lateral and medial excursion of the mandible

Innervation:  Facial n.
