Origin: Iliac crest and iliolumbar ligament

Insertion: Inferior border of twelfth rib and first four lumbar vertebrae. 

Action: Acting together, pull 12th ribs inferiorly during forced exhalation, fix 12th ribs to prevent their elevation during deep inhalation and help extend lumbar portion of vertebral column; acting singly, laterally flex vertebral column, especially lumbar portion.

Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerve T12 and lumbar spinal nerves L1-L3 or L1-L4

Definition

Origin: Xiphoid process of the sternum, costal cartilages and adjacent portions of the inferior 6 ribs, lumbar vertebrae and their Intervertebral discs, and the 12th rib.

Insertion: Central tendon

Action: Contraction of the diaphragm causes it to flatten and increases the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity, resulting in inhalation; relaxation causes it to move superiorly and decreases the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity, resulting in exhalation.

Innervation: Phrenic nerve, which contains axons from cervical spinal nerves (C3-C5)

Action: Contraction elevates the ribs and increases the anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of the thoracic cavity, resulting in inhalation; relaxation depresses the ribs and decreases the anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of the thoracic cavity resulting in exhalation.
