Term
Piriformis
Definition
Origin- Anterior surface of sacrum and sacrotubrous ligament.
Insertion- Superior Border of greater trochanter of femur
Innervation- Ventral Rami of S1 and S2
Action- Lateral rotation of extended thigh, abduction of flexed thigh, steadies femoral head in acetabulum
Term
Gamellus Superior
Definition
Origin- Ischial Spine
Insertion- Medial surface of greater trochanter of femur
Innervation- ventral rami S1 and S2
Action- Lateral rotation of extended thigh, abduction of flexed thigh, steadies femoral head in acetabulum (same as piriformis)
Term
Gamellus Inferior
Definition
Origin- Ischial tuberosity
Insertion- Medial Surface of greater trochanter
Innervation- ventral rami of S1 and S2
Action- lateral rotation of extended thigh, abduction of flexed thigh, steadies femural head in acetabulum (same as piriformis)
Term
Obturator Internus
Definition
Origin- Pelvis surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones.
Insertion- Medial surface to greater trochanter of femur
Innervation- Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
Action- Lateral rotation of extended thigh, abduction of flexed thigh, steadies femur head in acetabulum. (same as piriformis)
Term
Obturator Externus
Definition
Origin- Outer surface of obturator membrane and outer surface of the bony margin of the obturator foramen.
Insertion- Trochanteric Fossa
Innervation- Obturator nerve (posterior division)
Action- Laterally rotate thigh, steadies head of femur in acetabulum
Term
Quadratus Femoris
Definition
Origin- Lateral border of the ischial tuberosity
Insertion- Quadrate tubercle and the area below it.
Innervation- Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Action- Laterally rotate thigh (stongest), steadies femoral head in acetabulum
Term
visible only during dissection
Definition
obturator externus
Term
Triceps Coxae
Definition
Superior Gamellus, Obturator Internus, Inferior Gamellus
Term
What is the key muscle in understanding the arrangement of structures in the Gluteal Region?
Definition
Piriformis
Term
What structures pass above the piriformis? (3)
Definition
Superior gluteal nerve, artery, and vein.
Term
What structures pass below the piriformis?
Definition
Internal Pudendal vessels
Pudendal nerve
Posterior Cutaneous nerve of thigh
Inferior Gluteal nerve and vessels
Sciatic nerve
Nerve to quadratus femoris
Nerve to obturator internus
