Term
What is the difference between producer organisms and consumer organisms?
Definition
Producers manufacture their own food through photosynthesis. Consumers cannot manufacture their own food and must obtain it from other sources.
Term
Distinguish between an annual and a perennial plant.
Definition
Annual plants sprout from seed each year nad die in the winter. (They live only one growing season.) Perennial plants, which also produce seed, survive through the winter.
Term
What is the difference between an animal that hibernates and one that sleeps through the winter?
Definition
If an animal is hibernating, its body temperature and metabolism drop, it becomes inactive, and it is difficult to wake. If an animal is just sleeping, its body temperature remains near normal and it can awaken easily.
Term
If a habitat lacks one of the basic needs of a population or organisms, what are three possible results for the population?
Definition
The population may adjust to the conditions, move to another area, or die.
