Five or more of the following symptoms lasting 2 weeks:
- Depressed mood most of the day
- Obersvable reduction in interest or pleasure in activities
- Significant weight loss or gain and change in appetite
- Sleep Disturbance
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Feelings of worthless or guilt
- Difficulty concetrating, thinking, or making decisisions
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

- Lasting at least 1 week.
- Time period not required if hospitalized
- Does not meet the criteria for a mixed episode
- Causes marked impairment in functioning
- Symptoms are not due to use of a substance
