Term

A warrior is spinning his weapon before he relases it in a circular motion.

What will be the velocity and force when the weapon is released?

Definition

In circular motion, the velocity is always straight in the direction of travel, and the force is a centripetal force that points toward the center of the circle.

Term

Which is the weakest of the fundamental forces?

Definition
gravitational force
Term
You drop a glass to the floor It begins to fall due to the force of gravity that the earth exerts on it. What is the equal and opposite force demanded by Newton’s Third Law of Motion?
Definition

The glass exerts an equal and opposite force on the earth.

Term

The gravitational force between two objects (mass

1 = 10 kg, mass2 = 4 kg) is measured when the

objects are 20 centimeters apart. If the 10-kg mass is replaced with a 40-kg mass and the 4-kg mass is

replaced with a 16-kg mass, how does the new gravitational attraction compare to the first one that was

measured?

Definition

When the 10-kg mass is replaced by a 40-kg mass, the mass is multiplied by 4. This multiplies the gravitational force by 4. The 4-kg mass is multiplied by 4 when it is replaced by the 16-kg mass, so that further multiplies the

force by 4. Thus, the total change is 4x4 = 16. The new gravitational force, then, is 16 times larger

than the old one.

Term

Universal Law of Gravitation: allows physicists to calculate the strength of the gravitational force between two objects.

  • All objects with mass are attracted to one another by the gravitational force.
  • The gravitational force between two masses is directly proportional to the mass of each object.
  • The gravitational force between two masses is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between those two objects.

How do you then detemine the gravitational force between 2 masses?

Definition
Review examples 11.1 in your book to understand the math.
Term

The gravitational force between two objects (mass

1 = 10 kg, mass2 = 6 kg) is measured when the objects are 10 centimeters apart. If the distance between them is increased to 30 centimeters, how does the new gravitational attraction compare to the first one that was measured

Definition

The only difference is that the distance between the objects was multiplied by 3. The gravitational force

decreases when the distance between the objects increases. It is decreased according to the square of

that increase. Thus, the force is divided by 32

, which is 9. The new gravitational force, then, is 9 times

smaller than the old one

Term

Two moons orbit two different planets, but they orbit their planets at the same distance. If the first

one takes 6 months to make an orbit and the second takes 2 years, which is being subjected to the

greatest gravitational attraction?

Definition

The first one moves faster, because it takes less time to make the orbit. The principles of circular motion state that the faster the speed, the greater the centripetal force necessary. Gravity supplies the centripetal force in an orbit. Thus, the first moon experiences the greatest gravitational force

Term
Name the outer planets
Definition

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune

Term
Name the inner planets
Definition
Mercury, Venus, earth, and Mars
Term

Which planet in the solar system receives the least amount of insolation?

Definition
Term

Which planet in the solar system receives the mostt amount of insolation?

Definition
Mercury because it is closest to the sun
Term

Which of the following orbits is more likely that of a comet that is relatively easy to see in the night sky?

Definition
The eliptical obit because its orbit gets the closest to the sun.
Term

A. Name the parts of the comet.

Which part of the comet come and go as it gets close to the sun?

Definition

A.  1. Nucleus

2. coma

3. tail

B. The coma and tail

Term
The Kuiper Belt is considered to be a source of _________.
Definition
Short-term comets
Term

What theory says that gravity is caused by the exchange of particles between objects with mass?

Definition

The graviton theory states that gravity is caused by the exchange of particles.

Term

Suppose a scientist determines that there are only two fundamental forces in nature: the electroweak force and the strong force. Which of the two current theories of gravity does this mean is true?

Definition

The General Theory of Relativity would be true, because this theory states that gravity is not actually a force. Instead, it is simply a consequence of how mass bends space and time.
