Definition
A fingerstick puncture should be made perpendicular to the ridges of the fingerprint, so the drop of blood doesn't run down the ridges.

Definition
The side of the finger where there is less soft tissue, where vessels and nerves are located should be avoided.

The site should be cleansed in a circular fashion with an alcohol prep; beginning at the site and working outward. Allow to dry.

-Palpitate and trace the vein path with index finger. (arteries pulsate and thrombosed veins roll and feel like cords.

-Massage the arm from wrist to elbow to force blood to the vein.

-extensive scar site, upper extremities on mastectomy side, hematoma, site where an IV is located, drawing from IV lines, cannula, fistule, or heparin lock, and edematous extremities.
