Brand: Ecotrin

Class: Analgesic, Antiplatelet

Indication: Cardiac conditions, stroke conditions, pain

Contra: HS to NSAIDS, chidren with flu or chickenpox, asthma, rhinitis

Dosing: 81-325mg

Side effect: N&V, swelling of skin, lethargy,

Report if: bleeding, GI distress
Instructions: take with water, food/milk, no alcohol

Definition

Brand: Tylenol

Class: Analgesic, antipyretic

Indication: pain, fever, headache

Contra: HS to acetaminophen, hepatic impaired

Dosing: 650-1000mg q4-6h; max 4g/day

Peds dosing: 10-15mg/kg/dose q4-6h; max 5 doses

Side effect: N&V, headache, constipation

Report if: bleeding, liver, kidney failure)
Instructions: take with water, NO ALCOHOL

Definition

Brand: advil

Class: analgesic, NSAID

Indication: pain, fever, headache/migraine, (osteo) arthritis

Contra: HS to ibuprofen, asthma, allergic rxn to NSAID or aspirin, CABG, bad for ppl with heart condition

Dosing: 200-400mg q4-6h; max 1200mg/day

Peds dosing: 5-10mg/kg/dose q6-8h; max 4 doses/day

Side effect: N&V, headache, constipation/diarrhea

Report if: bleeding, rash or other skin conditions
Instructions: take with food, milk. do NOT take with alcohol, smoking, add'l NSAIDS

Definition

Brand: Naprosyn

Class: NSAID

Indication: pain, fever, headache, inflammation of tendons, bones, joint

Contra: HS to naproxen sodium, asthma, allergic rx to NSAID or aspirin, bad for people with heart conditions

**BBW**

Dosing: 200-500mg q12h; take more than 2 doses/day

Side effect: N&V, headache/dizziness, constipation

Report if: bleeding, cardiac conditions/stroke symptoms present
Instructions: Take with food, milk. Do NOT drink alcohol, do anythign that requires alertness (due to side effects)

Diphenhydramine

Definition

Brand: Benadryl

Class: antihistamine

Indication: allergic rhinitis, common cold, insomnia, motion sickness, itchiness

Contra: HS to diphenhydramine, infants, nursing mothers

Dosing: 25-50mg q4-6h

Peds dosing: 6.25-25mg q4-6h

Side effect: drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, dry nose

Report if: showing allergic rxn
Instructions: do NOT drink alcohol, use antidepressants or MAO inhibitors at same time, and don't do anything that requires alertness

Pseudoephedrine
Definition

Brand: Sudafed

Class: alpha-adrenergic agonist, decongestant

Indication: Allergic rhinitis, congestion of nasal sinus

Contra: HS to psuedoephedrine & sympathomimetics, hypertension, MAOI therapy, CAD (severe)

Dosing: 60mg q4-6h; max 240mg/day

Side effect: hypertension, insomnia, anxiety, restlessness

Report if: signs of cardiac dysfunction (irregular heartbeat), fever, symptoms do not improve after 7 days
Instructions: AVOID use of OTC stimulant, taking at night (to prevent insomnia)

Chlorpeniramine
Definition

Brand: Chlor-phen

Class: antihistamine, respiratory agent, cold/cough agent

Indication:  allergic rhinitis, common cold

Contra: HS to chlorpheniramine or dexchlorpheniramine

Dosing: 4mg q4-6h; max 24mg/day

Side effect: N&V, constipation/diarrhea, drowsiness

Report if: signs of CNS depression/excitation
Instructions: Do NOT drink alcohol, take CNS depressants

Oxymetazoline
Definition

Brand: Afrin

Class: decongestant

Indication: conjunctivitis (pink eye), nasal congestion, ocular irritation

Contra: HS to oxymetazoline or adrenergic agents, glaucoma

Dosing: 2-3 sprays or gtt of 0.05% nasal soln in each nostril BID for up to 3 days

Side effect: headache, rebound, dry nasal mucosa, nasal stinging/burning, sneezing

Report if: 
Instructions: do NOT use more than 3 days, avoid using MAOI or depressant

Definition

Brand: Claritin

Class: antihistamine (less-sedating), respiratory agent

Indication: urticaria (allergic rxn, hives), seasonal allergic rhinitis

Contra: HS to desloratidine

Dosing: 10mg QD

Pediatric dosing: 2-5yr: 5mg/day, 6+yr: 10mg/day

Side effect: dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, fatigue

Report if:
Instructions: May be taken with or without water, avoid doing anything that requires mental alertness

Definition

Brand: Zyrtec

Class: antihistamine, respiratory agent

Indication: perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria

Contra: HS to levocetirizine/hydroxyzine

Dosing: 5-10mg/day

Pediatric dosing: >12: 5-10mg/day, 6-11y: 5-10mg/day, 2-5y: 2.5-5mg/day, 23mo-6y: 2.5mg, max 5mg

Side effect: dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, fatigue

Report if:
Instructions: Can take chewable tab c/s water. Do NOT drink alcohol, CNS depressants, avoid anything that requires mental alertness

Phenylephrine
Definition

Brand: Neofrin

Class: decongestant

Indication: nasal congestion, glaucoma

Contra: HS to phenylephrine, peds with low weigh, hypertension, narrow angle glaucoma

Dosing: 10-20mg q4h (oral); 2-3 gtt/spray of 0.25% or 0.5% nasal soln in each nostrol q4h prn

Side effect: rebound nasal congestion, nasal stinging/burning/ sneezing, high blood pressure

Report if: signs of irregular heartbeat
Instructions: Blow nose before but not 5-10min after. For gtt, put head back. Do NOT take nasal form for more than 3-5 days (rebound), MAOI therapy, antidepressant, antihypertensive

Definition

Brand: Robitussin

Class: antitussive

Indication: cough

Contra: HS to dextromethorpha/levophanol, use of MAOI 

Dosing: 10-20mg q4h or 30mg q6-8h, max 120mg/day

Side effect: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, confusion, irritability, nervousness

Report if:
Instructions: Do NOT use MAO inhibitors, avoid anything that requires mental alertness

Definition

Brand: Mucinex

Class: Expectorant

Indication: Sputum, abnormal amount

Contra: HS to guafenesin

Dosing: 200-400mg q4h, max 2400mg/day

Side effect: N&V, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, rash, stomach pain

Report if:
Instructions: Take with water, and stay hydrated

Definition

Brand: Colace

Class: Laxative, stool softener

Indication: constipation care

Contra: HS to docusate, use of mineral oil, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal pain/n&v/sudden change in bowel habit for 2 weeks

Dosing: 50-200mg qd or divided in doses BID-QID

Side effect: bitter taste, diarrhea, nausea, cramp

Report if: No bowel movement happes after 5 days, rectal bleeding
Instructions: Usually works within 1-2 days, but may take as long as 3-5 days, NO MORE than 1 week. Do NOT use stool softener within 2h of taking other meds.

Definition

Brand: Dulcolax

Class: stimulant laxative

Indication: constipation, bowel prep

Contra: appendicitis, gastroenteritis, instestinal obstruction

Dosing: 5-15mg qd, max 30mg/day

Side effect: abdominal pain or discomfort, diarrhea, cramping, rectal burning

Report if: rectal bleeding, failure to have bowel movement within 12h of taking oral form
Instructions: Do NOT take it within 1h of antacids, milk, or any other milk products. Do not take it for more than 7 days.

Brand: Sena-kot

Class: laxative

Indication: constipation, bowel prep

Contra: HS to Senna, bowel obstruction, children >12y, acute inflammation, N&V, appendicitis, undiagnosed abdominal pain

Dosing: 15mg qd

Side effect: nausea, diarrhea, cramps, abdominal pain, urine discoloration

Loperamide
Definition

Brand: Imodium AD

Class: antidiarrheal

Indication: acute diarrheal, chronic diarrhea (IBS), high output ileostomy, traveler's diarrhea

Contra: HS to loperatmide, abdominal pain in absense of diarrhea, infanct <24mo (do not use as primary therapy), bacterical enterocolitis, dysentery, pseudomembranous colitis, ulcerative colitis

Dosing: 4mg followed by 2mg after each loose stool up to max 16mg/day

Side effect: N&V, dizziness, abdominal pain, fatigue

Report if: no improvement after 2 days
Instructions: Drink with lots of water. Do not take more than 16mg/day. Do not do anything that requires mental alertness.
