•New Netherland was a threat to England because of its trade, its location, and its expanding settlements. (There were English colonies to the north and Virginia to the south.)
•England’s King Charles II decided that his brother, Duke of York, should drive the Dutch out of New Netherland. The duke’s ships appeared off New Amsterdam in 1664 and the colony surrendered.
•The name of the colony was changed to New York.

He wrote a constitution, or plan of government. He allowed the settlers to elect leaders. He invited people from all over Europe to move to his colony.
The Quakers treated the Indians fairly. They bought the land for their colony from the Indians and lived in peace with them.
