Term
What are the 3 layers of the meninges?
Definition
1. Dura
2. Arachnoid
3. Pia
Term
What are the two layers of the Dura mater, and which of the two is a part of the Falx cerebri?
Definition
1. Periosteal
2. Meningeal

The meningeal layer is a part of the falx cerebri
Term
What does the falx cerebri divide?
Definition
The two cerebral hemispheres
Term
What structure forms between the periosteal and the meningeal layers at the falx cerebri and what role does it play?
Definition
1. Superior sagittal sinus

2. It allows CSF to drain through the arachnoid mater and returns it to the venous circulation
Term
What is the tentorum cerebelli and what does it do?
Definition
Its a part of the dura mater that separates the cerebellum from the inferior portion of the occipital lobes.
Term
What are the 3 meningeal spaces?
Definition
1. Epidural space - between bone and dura
2. Subdural space - between dura and arachnoid
3. Subarachnoid space - between arachnoid and pia
Term
What are the 2 types of hematomas and which one usually accompanies more serious injuries?
Definition
1. Epidural and Subdural

2. Subdural usually is more serious, corresponds to the shaking of the brain inside the skull as opposed to a blow to the skull
Term
How many ventricles are there?
Definition
4
2x lateral
1x third
1x fourth
Term
What is made in the ventricles of the brain?
Definition
CSF
Term
What brain region borders the following:
1. Ventricle 3
2. Cerebral aqueduct
3. Ventricle 4
4. lateral ventricles
Definition
1. Diencephalon
2. Midbrain
3. pons, medulla, cerebellum
4. cerebrum
Term
What is the role of the choroid plexus?
Definition
To make CSF in the ventricles
Term
What is hydrocephalus?
Definition
Overproduction of CSF
Term
What cellular structure provide the BBB with its ability to prevent diffusion of large molecules, toxins, pathogens, etc.
Definition
Tight junctions in the endothelial cells prevents the passage of molecules through the endothelia. They must instead pass through the cell membranes themselves, either by specialized transporters or diffusion through the cell.
Term
What glial cell type is attached to the BBB endothelial cells that plays a major role in the selectivity?
Definition
Astrocytes. They release cytokines that play an active role in the BBB
Term
What are some of the downsides of the BBB?
Definition
1. It can obstruct drug delivery
2. Its not an absolute barrier (nicotine, alcohol, etc. can pass it)
3. It can be compromised by trauma allowing passage of bad cells and compounds into the brain
Term
What are the 8 major arteries that comprise the blood supply to the brain
Definition
1. Anterior cerebral
2. Anterior communicating
3. Internal corotid
4. Middle cerebral
5. Posterior communicating
6. Posterior cerebral
7. Basilar artery
8. vertebral arteries
Term
At what part of the brain do the vertebral arteries combine to form the basilar arter?
Definition
Pons
