The water used in public fountains, bath houses etc was supplied by aqueduct - channels dug in the ground and lined with clay. They could supply 2 million gallons of water per day.
Cities and towns were built near springs but as the population grew, the need for fresh water became greater but transporting large volumes of water was not possible at the time as lead pipes were too weak and bronze pipes too expensive - iron pipes were not known. |
