Hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide)
Definition
Classification: Thiazide diuretic, antihypertensive.

Uses: Treatment of mild to moderate hypertension, edema in HF, nephrotic syndrome(kidney disease).

Side Effects: Potassium depletion, orthostatic hypotension, headache, photosensitivity.

Nursing Considerations: Check vitals, esp BP for hypotension before administering.

Classification: Anticoagulant

Uses: Treatment of venous thrombosis (blood clot), pulmonary embolism (lung blood clot). Helps prevent blood clots.

Side Effects: Hypersensitivity reaction, dermatitis, uriticaria (hives) esp in those sensitive to asprin.

Classification: Antinausea, antiemetic

Uses: Prevention/treatment of nausea/vomiting, radiation induced nausea/vomiting.

Side effects: anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, fatigue, hypoxia (low oxygen levels), urinary retention, xerostomia (dry mouth), fever, feeling of cold, redness/pain @ injection site, paresthesia (pins and needles in abdomen), asthenia (loss of strength, energy), hypersensitivity reaction, blurred vision.

Classification: Antiarrhythmic, cardiotonic.

Uses: Treatment of mild to moderate HF, atrial fibrillation (rate controlled).

Side Effects: Dizziness, headache, rash, visual disturbances.

Nursing Considerations: Assess apical pulse. If 60 or less/min withhold drug, contact physician.

Uses: Treatment of herpes

Side Effects: Inflammation at IV site, burning, stinging, severe itching, rash, uneasiness, headache, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, tremors.

Classification: Diuretic

Uses: Treatment of edema associated with HF, chronic renal failure, hepatic cirrhosis, acute pulmonary edema, treatment of hypertension.

Side Effects: Electrolyte disturbances, dizziness, light-headedness, headache, blurred vision, paresthesia, photosensitivity, rash, fatigue, bladder spasms, restlessness, diaphoresis (sweating).

Nursing Considerations: Check vitals, esp BP and pulse for hypotension before administering.

Classification: Antitubercular

Uses: Drug of choice for tb. Used in combination with one or more other antitubercular agents for treatment of active tb.

Side Effects: Pain at injection site, hypersensitivity reaction.

Side Effects: Peripheral edema, headache, flushed skin, dizziness, shakiness, muscle cramps/pain, drowsiness, palpitations, nasal congestion, cough, dyspnea, hypotension, rash, constipation, abdominal discomfort, flatulence, sexual dysfunction.

Uses: Management of type 2 diabetes.

Side Effects: Unpleasant/metallic taste that resolves spontaneously during therapy.

Uses: Relief moderate to severe, acute, or chronic pain.

Side Effects: Sedation, decreased BP, diaphoresis, facial flushing, dizziness, drowsiness. Allergic reaction, confusion, palpitations, tremors, urinary retention, visual changes, dry mouth, headache, decreased appetite, paralytic ileus(Paralysis of the intestines).
