Definition
An electromagnetic wave of high energy and very short wavelength, which is able to pass through many materials opaque to light.
RISKS:
-Causes cell damage.
-Uses radiation
BENEFITS:
-Quick and easy results
-Painless and non-invasive |

Term
M.R.I.
(Magnetic Resonance Imagine)
|
|
Definition
-uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within your body
RISKS:
-There are no known risks or side effects to having a MRI
BENEFITS:
-Does not involve radiation
-MRI contrasting agent is less likely to produce an allergic reaction that may occur when iodine-based substances are used for x-rays and CT scans. |

|
Term
C.T. Scan
(X-ray Computed Tomography) |
|
Definition
-Diagnostic medical test that, like traditional x-rays, produces multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body
RISKS:
-The risk of serious allergic reaction to contrast materials that contain iodine is extremely rare, and radiology departments are well-equipped to deal with them.
-CT scanning is, in general, not recommended for pregnant women unless medically necessary because of potential risk to the baby in the womb
BENEFITS:
-Has the ability to see soft tissue and blood vessels all at the same time.
-Provides detailed images of many types of tissues as well as the lungs, bones and blood vessels.

Term
|
Definition
-Sound or other vibrations having an ultrasonic frequency, particularly as used in medical imaging.
Challenges: (I couldn't find any risks but I did find challenges)
-One challenge that ultrasound operators face is keeping the transducer positioned over the part of the fetus the operator is trying to visualize.
-Another challenge is that sound doesn't travel well through air or bone, so no ultrasound is effective at imaging parts of your body that have gas in them or are hidden by bone.
Benefits:
-Can determine the sex of your unborn baby.
-Can detect lesions in woman with dense breasts when mammograms cannot.
|
|
|
Term
|
Definition
-process of using low-energy X-rays (usually around 30 kVp) to examine the human breast, which is used as a diagnostic and screening tool.
Risks:
-Mammograms are not always accurate, the accuracy depends on the experience and skill of your radiologist.
-Mammograms in young woman can be difficult to interpret.
Benefits:
-They can save your life (they reduce the risk of a dying disease by 25-30% more)
-The procedure is safe and efficient.

Term
PET Scan
(Positron Emission Tomography) |
|
Definition
-a nuclear medicine imaging test that uses a form of radioactive sugar to create images of body function and metabolism.
RISKS:
-Causes a major allergic reaction, in rare instances
-Exposes your child to radiation if you're breast feeding.
BENEFITS:
-Can help you avoid unnecessary surgery.
-A eary predictor of patients' response to their therapy. |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
-a type of medical imaging that shows a continuous X-ray image on a monitor, much like an X-ray movie.
RISKS:
-radiation-induced injuries to the skin and underlying tissues (“burns”), which occur shortly after the exposure
-radiation-induced cancers, which may occur some time later in life.
BENEFITS:
-don’t require any special preparation (except when contrast media is used)
-require no recovery time — you can go straight back to work or school after an X-ray is finished. |
