HIV Reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Inhibits the enzyme reverse transcriptase which HIV uses to copy it’s RNA into DNA. Side effects include anemia, neutropenia, nausea, malaise, headache, insomnia, myopathy. Therapist should monitor pt. for feelings of tiredness, nausea, headaches, or feeling “out of sorts”. Therapist should be aware that pt. may not be sleeping well. |

HIV Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that inhibits the enzyme reverse transcriptase which HIV uses to copy it’s RNA into DNA. Pt. may have abdominal cramps, fever, edema and other side effects from the medication. Abnormal cardiac rate and rhythm may occur along with hypertension and other cardiovascular side effects. The therapist should be aware of these side effects and explain to the pt. what red flag symptoms to look for and continuously monitor the pt. for discomfort and indications to stop exercise. |
